The mistral in France is a cool or cold, often violent, and usually dry wind, blowing throughout the year but is most frequent in winter and spring. It blows from the northwest or north of Europe through the valley of the Rhône River to the Mediterranean.[1] It also affects the whole of Sardinia in Italy.
In the south of France the name comes from the Languedoc dialect of the provençal language and means "masterly". The same wind is called mistrau in the Occitan language, mestral in Catalan and maestrale in Italian and Corsican.
The mistral is usually accompanied by clear and sunny weather, and it plays an important role in creating the climate of Provence. It can reach speeds of more than ninety kilometers an hour, particularly in the Rhone Valley.

Der Mistral ist der NW-Wind in der Provence, in Frankreich. Die Provenzalen kennen 32 Winde aus allen Himmelsrichtungen und der Mistral ist der direkt aus NW wehende Wind. Er kann zuerst recht sanft und durch die Landmasse noch aufgewärmt und deshalb warm wehen. Nach einigen Stunden oder gar Tagen kann er ein starker bis sehr starker Wind werden, der aus nordwestlicher Richtung über Frankreich in den Mittelmeerraum weht. Typisch ist dann ein wolkenloser, dunkelblauer Himmel, gute Fernsicht, nachts ein beeindruckender Sternenhimmel und ein erheblicher Abfall der Temperatur. Er kann tagelang wehen und tritt so häufig auf, dass die Bäume im Rhonetal oft in Windrichtung nach Süden hin gebogen sind.
Er entsteht durch in den Mittelmeerraum einströmende Polarluft. Die Alpen und Pyrenäen bilden eine Blockade, so dass zwischen diesen Gebirgen die kalte Polarluft ins Rhônetal gelangt. Durch diese Kanalisierung (Düseneffekt) entstehen dort hohe Windgeschwindigkeiten von 50 – 75 km/h, in Spitzen über 135 km/h. Außerdem ist der Mistral sehr trocken und entzieht dem Boden Feuchtigkeit, was die Waldbrandgefahr in der Provence erheblich erhöht.
