'La Fête Nationale' in Paris ~~~ Nationaltag in Paris

Bastille Day is the French national holiday which is celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is formally called La Fête Nationale (The National Celebration) and commonly le quatorze juillet (the fourteenth of July). It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution. Festivities are held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris in front of the President of the Republic.

Der 14. Juli ist der Französische Nationalfeiertag (frz.: Fête nationale und 14 juillet) und erinnert - anders als üblicherweise angenommen - nicht an den Sturm auf die Bastille am 14. Juli 1789, sondern an das Föderationsfest (Fête de la Fédération) 1790, das sich aber auf den Volksaufstand im Vorjahr bezog.

Der 14. Juli wird üblicherweise mit Militärparaden im ganzen Land begangen und allgemein als Feier der französischen Siege in der Vergangenheit betrachtet. Die größte und bekannteste dieser Paraden findet in Paris auf der Avenue des Champs-Élysées statt. Gleichzeitig ist er aber auch ein populäres Volksfest mit Feuerwerk und Bällen, die traditionell von der Feuerwehr ausgerichtet werden. In manchen Städten findet es in der Nacht zum 14. Juli statt, in den meisten aber in der Nacht zum 15. Juli. Außerhalb Frankreichs wird manchmal auch ein Volksfest von der Botschaft organisiert, zum Beispiel in Berlin.
