Our First storm

Monday afternoon we had an appointment in town, before we left the orphanage where we live, I looked to the sky. Seeing the large black clouds looming and knowing we had to walk some of the way, I called and rearranged the meeting.
We stood on the 3rd floor covered balcony with the kids and watched as they moved closer, suddenly the wind dropped and it was calm, then from the rear of the orphanage large rain drops started to fall. The wind picked up and started swirling the rain as it fell. Some kids screamed and hid in the bedroom others wanted to watch and stood with us. The wind increased as the palm trees swayed furiously, the smaller trees, branches snapped 1,2,3 just in our line of view. Loud bang and flash as the electricity transformer cables hit the pole, the circuit breaker snaps and power is lost. We look to the road where a trick has changed to a torrent; everything is flowing plastic bags, tins and branches. The stench rises as the drains and sewers cannot cope with the amount of water.
As fast as it came the rain stopped and the wind dropped. The clean-up started the boy’s dormitory had taken full force of the wind and rain and had flooded, soaking clothes and bedding. Our room is adjacent to the boy’s but we have glass windows unlike the boys, which had saved us from the onslaught. All hand were on deck as the kids hung out clothes and bedding to dry and we mopped the floors.
Two hours later the road had dried, left covered in rubbish, the storm had moved on.
Are we glad we rearranged our meeting.
