Time in Ethiopia

We know that you are thinking of us and wondering if we are back yet, or not. Yes, we are, since we came back last Sunday from Ethiopia the time was very busy. Our boss from BMS arrived Monday and stayed with us for few days. Now we are settled again - so welcome back.

We would like to share with you the stories which inspired us so much, but because of time restrain we will write more about that in the next blog. This is just a very quick update.
Many of you have been praying for us. Thank you so much.

Andy writes: We have been encouraged by our trip to Ethiopia, to say the least we were amazed at the empowerment these women had received.

Ten years ago Self Help Groups were introduced into Ethiopia and the town of Nazret/Adama. We were able to see the success story; many thousands of people have been touched by this program. The program targets the poorest of the poor and equips them to see and use their own resources, rather than rely on external donors. The change and difference was exciting for us to experience. We had two weeks of intensive training also visiting groups to see the practical side. We were there as two new groups were formed after going through wealth ranking; these ladies looked towards the ground, looking ashamed and timid.
The stark contrast was a group that had been going from the beginning, faces beaming with confidence as they explained how the program had changed their lives; they had been able to open a day-care and primary school, employing members from the group as their support. These groups had been able to lobby local government to change policies regarding child protection and advocacy for the vulnerable.

Our training course consisted of 14 Kenyans and the 2 of us. On a funny note the Kenyans thought it was hot, it was 20 C and we thought it was pleasant after leaving Haiti in the low 30 C. It was 2000 feet elevation and a lovely part of Africa, the town is just on the edge of a valley, with great views.

Ethiopia has booming economy with buildings and factories going up everywhere. Quite different to the images we saw in the 80’s of a famine hit country, although it still remains one of the world’s poorest countries.
Our time was filled with lots of group visits, discussion and reflection time and presentations.
Before graduation, we presented our action plan for Haiti
After the graduation, we cut the cake. It reminded me of my wedding.
