National Strike

Roads empty on fourth strike day

Please pray for Guinea as a whole, we are five days into a national strike. The negotiators are demanding that a litre of fuel drop from 8000 franc Guinean to 5000. Many call the demands ridiculous, with the drop being too far, but they are holding out. All shops, school, service stations are closed with only a minimal service at hospitals and pharmacies. Taxis are forbidden to run by the syndicate, those who break the strike are likely to be stopped and their bike or car confiscated. Most who break the strike just remove the taxi number plate and continue to work as though it were a private vehicle.

Petrol station closed, with vehicles that have run out of fuel waiting
Shops all closed

Everyone staying at home, this upmarket area deserted

It is very hard for those with little means, many live day by day. The market flourishes on people needing food on a daily basis, but those who are unable to stockpile food suffer enormously. The market is therefore allowed to open for a few hours in the morning, but only street sellers, not shops. So perishable foods are able to be found but at a price. The black-market for fuel is booming as those who have, taking advantage of those who need. Fuel is passing hands at 15000 FG per litre, rather than 8000 FG.

There are very few cars and motorcycles on the road, many take to walking wherever needed. Most people just stay at home because it is the safest place, sometimes demonstrations start peaceful but can quickly turn violent.

Pray for a swift and peaceful resolution.
