| Latest update: before and after the presidential election there were many demonstrations and riots with many businesses closed for several weeks. These circumstances influenced our decisions on when to start or even stop teaching English classes because of their sporadic nature. One evening Victor was teaching an English class, going to the school was as normal as it could be with vehicles and people mingling as usual. Two-hours later in the dark was a different story, as on the 3-mile journey home, he did not see one person or vehicle, it was surreal being the only one out on deserted roads. The incumbent president won a contested election, many are crying fraud. Still, the population are fed up with the violence, and life has returned to almost normal, within a Pandemic structure of restrictions. The knock-on effect of the paralysation of the country is that the government has postponed the re-opening of schools. Schools which closed for two weeks either side of the election will remain closed even longer, as families are still in their home villages and have no means to cover their children's school fees and transportation costs. Many citizens are feeling the hardship. We have heard that because of the disruption to the school year, there will only be one day holiday for Christmas and Easter as they try to make up time lost. |
