Normally I would answer, probably like you: I see a tree, the stump covered with leaves and other stuff, could be good compost. .
I see something hanging around the stump, not quite sure what this is for.
I see a lovely goat which is tied up in our courtyard.
What is your answer? After living here for a while, I actually changed my answers a bit to these questions.
Having a Muslim guardian, we need to see things not just with our western eyes; we have to look beyond, we need to see with our spiritual eyes. I had asked Sadou once about the things hanging on the stamp and he said that Muslims put it there for Allah so he would give them more fruit on the tree.
It never really occurred to me to ask about ‘the compost’ underneath the tree, I should have asked, because I was totally surprised to find out during a French lesson, reading an exercise: The largest tree in the garden is surrounded by branches and old leaves, as an offering for the ‘bari’ which is used as a fetish against bad spirits.
The goat was used yesterday as a sacrifice to Allah to give thanks for the birth of their son. Andy just saw the four feet - they will be probably being hanged somewhere - as well as a sign for protection or something else…
Sadou told us, that they did not even eat the goat yesterday, it is just used as a sacrifice and the meat gets send back to the wife’s family into the village and there it will be eaten.
All these things above have made me look more to the spiritual world. And I acknowledge more what Jesus has done for me and for all of us when he died on the cross. Jesus Christ the ultimate scarifies! Praise God!
Please pray that our guardian Sadou and his whole family will come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. I have heard from somebody, that in his heart he would be a Christian, but for the sake of his family he has not proclaimed it, because that would mean for all of them: persecution. But honestly I can’t really believe it, because when we found Jesus, we didn’t stay the same anymore, turning away from our old ways…. but who knows.
