Haiti - Religion : The Minister of Culture visit of

The Minister visited the lakou Beka [Delmas 75] which celebrated its first
anniversary. As required the ritual, Jean Mario Dupuy, saluted the memory of
the dead, before taking the floor in the middle of the dancers.
Reiterating the commitment of the administration Martelly-Lamothe (President) to
make the culture a pillar of the national economy, the Minister reiterated the
importance of the role of voodoo in Haitian society. "In a poor country
where health and education are lacking, these are the voodoo servants, who
often play the role of teachers, doctors and ensure the transfer of knowledge
between generations.
For a long time voodoo practitioners were not recognized as
citizens, today the Haitian State has decided to restore their identity," announcing
that the inhabitants of lakous, will receive identity documents and a place
where the ceremonies will be held.
Faithful to his plan to make culture an economically viable sector, the Minister announced the construction of toilet blocks in lakous, booths to display and sell crafts, including decorative flags and bottles, in order to make profitable the ceremony hall, the houmforts [room where the altar is erected] and the lakous.

Massacre in Cité Soleil leaves at least 25 dead, dozens
injured
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - A massacre by gangs from Cité Soleil
over the weekend left at least 25 dead and dozens others injured according to
residents of the small district of Simon Pelé where bullet flew at about 8 PM
Friday November 2.
Residents say the fight wasn't between two gangs and accuse
the police of being the only ones firing in the direction of the gang members
whose numbers had not been disclosed. The Police Commissioner in Cite Soleil
Alix Pierre Louis could not be found for comment but Police Spokesman Frantz
Lerebours rejected any suggestion that police officers were involved in the violence.
Among the victims was
a father of 8, a 70 year old liquor store owner. A woman 6 months pregnant was
shot four times. Another, a mother of three was shot in the chest and both of
her daughters were shot as well. All three are recovering in the hospital.
The area's residents
protested in the streets over the weekend complete with burning tires to block
the road ways. They are demanding that the National Police of Haiti and
MINUSTAH (UN Troops) do something to stop the gang violence in the city.
Deputy Saint Fleur said he deplored the laxity of MINUSTAH's
presence in its nearby field office that has the capability to maintain
security but does not.
